The Best Time to Plant A Garden in Tucson

Monsoon season has arrived and is an ideal time for planting in Tucson. The hot dry season of June has ended and lots of rain and some cooler temperatures can be expected for months to come, making this time a perfect opportunity to get your plants into the loosened ground and hydrated with plenty of water. You will notice that your plants almost overnight will look better and the cooler temperatures and humidity do wonders.

What to Plant — TUCSON JULY PLANTING GUIDE:

  • Herbs! Most herbs can be planted now except cilantro and parsley. You could grow basil for your own spaghetti sauces and to make your own pesto, which are both incredibly easy to make! Rosemary grows very well here, and actually you can find it in the wild. Mint is a good choice as well, but be careful, because mint grows quickly and will take over, so you’ll probably want to keep it quarantined in a pot. Other choices include oregano, dill, thyme, sage, tarragon and others.
  • Summer Vegetables! It’s not too late to plant a vegetable garden; try cucumbers, melons, squash, tepary beans, sweet potato, eggplant, pumpkins, and okra.
  • Peppers! We love our peppers in Tucson and there are so many that grow well here from jalapenos, habaneros, serranos, chiltepins and more. If you plant them now they will be ready in time for fall salsas and sauces.
